review 1: The book, “A Sick Day for Amos McGee” by Philip C. Stead, and illustrated by Erin E. Stead is a unique and heartwarming story. The story is about a character named Amos McGee who a zookeeper that always takes care of his good animal friends. However one day Amos McGee catches cold and doesn’t come to work. So his animal friends from the zoo come to take care of him. This book is such a creative story about love and the dedicated friendships Amos McGee had with all of the zoo animals. The illustrations of this book really spoke out to me because I didnt need to read the text of the book to understand what the story was about. That is a good sign of a well written picture book. One specific thing that stood out to me, and that was reoccurring throughout the story was... more the red balloon. Was the balloon suppose to be symbolic?
review 2: Although this book was a picture book it had a captivating story hidden. Amos McGee is old and fragile, he works at the zoo and always takes care of the zoo animals. He plays chess with the elephant, runs races with the tortoise, sits with the penguin, lends a handkerchief to the rhino, and reads to the owl. But one day Amos does not come to work because he is sick. The animals are worried and go to Amos's house. I learned when doing the Caldecott projects that Philip Stead's wife is the illustrator, which warms my heart because this book is so fragile and cute. I loved all of the illustrations, how the colors used represented Amos, calm colors. This would be a goo book to incorporate in a classroom because it shows how caring true friendships are and that is something a child should learn early on. It shows that in a friendship you are always able to count on your friend even when you do not ask. less

This story has a few great messages. The most important one is treat others the way you’d like to be treated, another is friends stick together, and friends come in all shapes and sizes. Amos rises early and goes to the zoo to be with his friends everyday. The one day the animals get on a bus to come see Amos. Everything they do is done in Amos’ home, but altered a bit because they aren;t at the zoo. Instead of Amos and the tortoise running a race, they played hide and seek. Amos does something special for each animal. On his sick day the animals did the same for him. The message of the book can help teach your children acts of kindness and friends don’t have to be just people.

I thought that this was such a sweet and sentimental book. I loved it now, but I'm sure I would have really enjoyed it as a child. The idea of this nice old man being friends with zoo animals with human personalities is a lot of fun. But it gets even more interesting when they come looking for him when he has a sick day. This book, I feel, addressing many things: personalities, being sick and being a good friend. I really enjoyed this book. I also really liked the illustrations, it was a truly beautiful use of pastel colors.
