review 1: Amos McGee is a zookeeper who could not go to work one day because he woke up with a cold. All of the animals were concerned for Amos so they all went to his house. They played games and had some tea until Amos felt well again, then the animals put Amos back to bed. The animals went back to the zoo and waited for Amos to come the next day. The illustrations were nothing to elaborate in this story. That does not mean that they were not a great fit for the story. The pastel and lightly drawn pictures show just how much Amos loved his job at the zoo, along with how sweet his animal friends and how much they care about him. The drawings definitely make the reader feel calm because the colors are so soft. Those colors paired with Amos being sick are perfectly reflected by each ... moreother. For the classroom, this book could be used for the topic of friendships and compassion. I remember in elementary school we used to have an assembly every month where in part of it, they taught us the word of the month like friendship, compassion, cooperation, diligence, etc. Stead, P. (2010). A sick day for Amos McGee.
review 2: Genre: Picture storybookAge: 3+ years oldSummary: This book is about a zookeeper names Amos. He takes care of all the animals in the zoo everyday. He races with the tortoise and gives the rhino a tissue for his runny nose. One day Amos does not show up to the zoo and all the animals begin to worry about their friend. Turns out Amos is sick and was not able to make it to the zoo. The animals, concerned for their friend take the bus to Amos's house and take care of him like he takes care of them each day. Comments:This is one of the best children's books I've read. The story is cute and simple and the characters are familiar for younger readers. The book is great for reading out loud and good for beginner readers.Observations: The illustrations for this book are amazing. The illustrator uses graphite and very little color keeping the pictures simple, but also equally as intricate. The colors are slightly washed out and only few features actually have color, which draws attention to that part of the picture.Questions:How did the animals know Amos was sick? How did the author get the idea for this book?Use in Classroom:This is a great book to read to younger classes for a story time. The storyline is simple, but will still keep the children engaged because children love animals. For slightly older class, the students could draw their favorite picture from the book and include 1-2 sentences why they liked it.Theme:The theme in this book is to be caring. Amos cared for the animals and when Amos needed to be taken care of, the animals were there to help and keep him company. Just showing a little compassion can go a long way.Criticism:This book brought a smile to my face immediately. The characters are so cute and children will love all the animals included in the story. Although there was not a lot of color in the illustrations and surprisingly the illustrations did not need to have a lot of color to be engaging.Format: Picture bookSocioeconomic status: N\ARace/Ethnicity: N\AGender: N\ACitation: Stead, P., & Stead, E. I thought that this book was very well written and told a very cute story. Amos McGee is a zoo keeper and visits his animal friends every day to take care of them. One day, he is sick and can't make it to work, so the animals decide to pay him a visit and take care of him. I thought that the theme of friendship and loyalty shined through the pages, with the idea that you should always be there for your friends. It was comical to see the animals waiting at the bus stop, and I am sure children would enjoy that as well. This children's picture book is great for lower level readers, especially because of the penciled pictures and comic relief. In a young classroom this book could be used in a journal entry for what the students would do if they were home sick for a day. It can also be used in the science subject by studying the kinds of animals in the book, such as elephants or owls. Stead, P., & Stead, E. (2010). A sick day for Amos McGee. Cute story of a man who works at the zoo and is a very good friend to the animals. He plays chess, reads stories, and does other activities with the animals such as racing the tortoise. The animals love him and depend on his company. One day he is too sick to go to work, and the animals are concerned, so they travel to his house to find out that the man is sick. The animals return the kindness by spending time enjoying each other's company, having tea, and playing games to help make their human friend feel better. Again, such a cute little story of friendship.
