review 1: I am going to have to edit my shelves for books like this.Spectyr completely lives up to the promise the author made in the first book, and I am completely hooked by the story of the magic weilding Deacons, Sorcha and Merrick, and their bonded companion Raen, cursed by (being) a terrible beast.This still has the strange steampunk/pulp vibe from the first one, but while the last book was based in a pseudo-northern europe, this book takes us to a pseudo-northern africa. The eye of the storm is located in a mud palace that evokes the idea of the great mosque of Djenne, and we learn a whole lot more about the history of this world (especially through the experiences of Merrick).I loved this book, but cant give it five, as the start was painfully slow at times, and we only retu... morern to the same page turning intensity at around 173 into the book, but then it is even better than the first book.I know I am longing to read the next in this series!
review 2: Despite assuming a too recent knowledge of the 'world' ( I read the first over the year ago and there were several times when I felt lost at references to things I was clearly meant to recall), this was a great easy read adventure. The characters are settling and growing in depth through the series and the plot had enough jeopardy to keep things interesting. It would've been nice to see more of Sorcha and Merrick's relationship (they were apart too long) and more of the fall out, especially for the Grand Duchess, but I suspect and hope these threads will be picked up in the next book. Certainly engaging enough for me to go straight on to read the next. less
