review 1: This was a difficult book to rate because I loved it and hated it. Lawyers have a bad reputation and one of the main characters in this book, Charles Benedict - a lawyer, perpetuates that stereotype. I almost put the book down because he's underhanded, mean, savage, and uses tricks, literally as he's a magician, to win cases. Just as easy as he can make a quarter appear behind your ear, he can make a deadly knife appear in his hand; just as easily as he can make a card disappear, he can and does make witnesses disappear. But the story intrigued me (he defends a wealthy man accused of murdering his wife) as I wanted to see how he would defend the client and if Charles would eventually get his comeuppance. The end did not disappoint.
review 2: Nice plot. Two
... more different plots in the beginning come together in the end. But I didn't really get the first plot. The woman wanted to get a witness to her alleged infidelity out of town. It would have been much simpler to pay the witness off, particularly just for a week, but I guess that's my big gripe. But without that plot you don't have the book. I also just came in on this series apparently, so no having read the previous books, when they are mentioned, it's almost in passing. i can't quite believe a woman who brought a president down for murder is doing insurance work. But again, it's fiction... less
