review 1: Over the years I've read a number of Margolin's books, and I either like them a lot or I don't. This falls in the latter group. I enjoyed the historical detail, the fact that it's based on a real case, but the dialog was so unrealistic and stilted that it threw me out of the story. I listened, and on audio the clunky dialog is a real problem. Predictable plot but interesting twists, sympathetic characters, colorful language and descriptions, compelling pace. I enjoyed the legal wrangling but got bogged down with the overfull plot and dialogue.
review 2: This story caught my attention from the opening chapter and held it through the final sentence. Even the end notes were interesting to read. Not the usual modern day who done it. We know from the outset who co... moremmitted the crimes, who the scoundrels were, who the real victims were; what we didn't know was how the main character, Worthy Brown, was going to win in court as a blackman during the early 1860s, shortly after Oregon became a state. Part fiction, based on a true court case, Margolin developed his characters well and described 1860's Phoenix and Portland, OR so precisely I could picture the carriages riding through town, and the people walking on muddy dirt streets. This story gave us a glimpse of the bawdy life in San Francisco after the gold rush, and of a growing Portland during the same time. We learn of the traveling circuit judges, the lawyers trying to implement a new state constitution, the attorneys and judges who could be bribed, and the attorneys who upheld the law. less
