review 1: This was the very 1st book I won through the "Goodreads First Reads giveaway". Having already read "Alex" I was excited to be able to continue the story of the detective Verhoeven. It was only when I started reading that I realised that "Irene" is actually the 1st novel in this crime series and that I therefore already knew one key element in the ending. Good writing, an interesting crime scenario but I have to say, I havn't yet warmed to any of the characters, especially Verhoeven. It is a great shame that "Irene" was translated into English after "Alex", as read in the correct order,I would have been able to award an extra star. I will certainly read the next Verhoeven story.
review 2: Almost a 5 star book - just the ending didn't feel that it flowed as well
... moreas the rest of the book. The book is brilliant though. Lemaitre is extremely clever and what appears to be a straightforward whodunit is slowly revealed to be something much more complex. He places you firmly into the scene with such clear descriptions that you can see the blood on the walls and carnage of a serial killer at work. Lemaitre doesn't spare any details so like 'Alex' this is not for the weak stomached as it is very graphic. Not as many twists and shocks as 'Alex', instead 'Irene' pays homage to the crime genre and will leave you questioning everything by the end! I would also say that to truly get the most of out of 'Irene' it would be better to read it before 'Alex' which has some spoilers. Lemaitre is quickly proving that he is not your average crime writer and is for me pushing the boundaries and stereotypes that define the genre. It's fast pace meant that I quickly devoured this book and I now have the painful task of trying to wait patiently for the translation of the third in the series. less

He is an excellent write. I was just disappointed with the ending. It felt rushed.

Very clever, but gory, crime thriller. A homage/love letter to the crime genre.
