review 1: I really loved LeMaitre’s book Alex and was keen to read this one, even though I am usually wary of reading a hit ‘new’ author’s back catalogue. This was not surprisingly a bit disappointing, although I did want to know more about the detective’s previous life before Alex. I ran out of time before it was due for return to the library and didn’t finish it, so I’ll wait until the next book comes along. And the inevitable TV adaptation!
review 2: I read Alex last year and thought it was great. It was a shame that this book being first in the series was published second as I knew the ending however, I don't know if I would have read Alex having read this first. Alex is clearly the better book. That said, Irene was suspenseful, graphic and kept me turn... moreing the page. Bringing crime fiction classics into the plot was great, but I was happy that I didn't recognise the scene from American Psycho. Liked the twist at the end and how the ending was described in a few simple pages. I would recommend this to any crime fiction fan but I would suggest reading Irene before Alex. less
