review 1: Just finished up this past week and the first thought that came to my mind was ... this felt like I was reading the book with Pope Emeritus Benedict sitting beside me 'coaching me' on it and explaining things to me in 'simple language' even though the concepts are very deep. He also brings many other 'scholarly' theologians to bear, if you will, on almost all the points/observations he brings forth. I think it has been mentioned that maybe this is his way of not trying to make his (expert) opinion come across as "from the seat of Peter" (i.e. as Papal Authority) but as a believer sincerely seeking to uncover the truths of the Gospels in light of Jesus; a very humble perspective from our Pope (Emeritus).
review 2: In this second book in the Pope's trilogy
... moreon the life of Jesus, and his historical, physical presence on the Earth. As with the first volume, a great effort is made to examine competing theories about exactly who Jesus was as a person.Consistent with the prior work, the Holy Scriptures are the starting point. Pope Benedict proves that one need not abandon any belief in the Scriptural Jesus, as the Son of God, and how he is portrayed in the Gospels, in order to discover something about the man who trod the earth. The Catholic Church has always taught that Jesus was fully and wholly God, while also being wholly man. While this is a mystery, there is no reason to abandon that thought and perspective when looking at the historical Jesus. This time the concentration is very specific to Holy Week. The reader is invited to follow Jesus from His triumphal entry into Jerusalem just before the Passover feast and to walk with him all the way to Calvary. The references to the Old Testament, in the prophets and Psalms, is invaluable. After reading this book, one is readily convinced that there is no reason not to believe that Jesus was at one and the same time the Son of God and fully man. less
