Jesus of Nazareth
review 1: This is the Jesus of Nazareth book I longed for ever since Ratzinger (Pope Benedict) mentioned it in the forward to his first Jesus of Nazareth book. Though slight, it is powerful. It is a quick read but one that will leave you with much food for reflection on the Incarnation, God's wide sweeping plan, the presence of the Cross from the beginning, and the infinite Love that takes such drastic steps to help us feel even a fraction of that love ourselves. Simply superb and highly recommended. If you've been nervous of the other Jesus of Nazareth books, and they can be quite dense in places, this is the place to begin.

(On a personal note, I am glad I read this first.)In a scholarly yet accessible tone, Pope Benedict attempts to explain and elaborate on the scant mentions of infancy and childhood in Matthew's and Luke's Gospels. He shows how the Christ story ties into older narratives and traditions, is the fulfillment of them; yet remains separate from them. He explains words and phrases, citing Church doctrine and tradition, including views of contemporary theologians. That is the fascinating part for me ;how a single word has an entire history behind it and a myriad of meanings or interpretations . less

Somewhat short, but a fascinating view into the two infancy tales of Jesus.

Not a heavy read, but enlightening. A pretty quick read, too, considering.
