review 1: Works exceptionally well both as an example of historical analysis and as Biblical hermeneutics. (The historical analysis piece, I respect even from a secular perspective; Benedict is engaged in extremely thoughtful evaluation of credibility of texts, and his way of processing the texts is worth emulating for its own sake.) Well worth the effort, and an excellent foray into the "whys" of Christianity.
review 2: The greatest compliment that I can give to this (or any!) book is that it lead to a fresh encounter with Christ. This book demonstrates the Pope's extensive learning, but it wears its acumen lightly. The text is winsome and engaging. This is a scholarly book to be sure, but it is scholarship that is drawn into the larger world of true devotion and love f... moreor its subject. Pope Benedict's series on Jesus draws on a lifetime of research and scholarship and somehow manages to enfold that into the heart-felt search for the "true face of God." If this series gives us any insight into what Benedict's legacy will be, then it will be a wonderful legacy indeed. less
