Jesus of Nazareth
review 1: A thought provoking read on the early life of Jesus. Pope Benedict goes through the infancy narratives in a logical way, looking at historical and biblical sources to support his claims. It really makes you think about the early life of Jesus and how it leads to his later ministry in a new way. Excellent. A must read for all Christians and those interested in studying Christian thought and theology.
review 2: Pope Benedict XVI has written a wonderful series of books about the life of Jesus. The first book, Jesus of Nazareth: From the Baptism in the Jordan to the Transfiguration, published in 2008, was followed by Jesus of Nazareth: Holy Week: From the Entrance Into Jerusalem To The Resurrection in 2010.The third volume in the series, Jesus of Nazareth: The Infa
... morency Narratives "detail how the stories of Jesus' infancy and childhood are as relevant today as they were two thousand years ago."This volume focuses on the story of Jesus from the Annunciation of the birth of Jesus and John the Baptizer to the Birth of Jesus. He continues with the visit from the Wise Men and the flight to Egypt, ending with the story of Jesus as a twelve-year-old in the Temple.Pope Benedict discusses each of these events from a historical and theological perspective. Citing early sources such as Justin Martyr (165 AD) and Origen (c. 254AD) and examining contemporary theologians, Pope Benedict reviews the arguments that have been made both for and against the historical accuracy of the Biblical accounts. What I love the most about all three books, is how Pope Benedict illustrates for the reader what St. Augustine observed about the Bible. St. Augustine stated that in the "Old Testament the New Testament is concealed; in the New Testament the Old Testament is revealed."Throughout each chapter, Old Testament passages are examined and Pope Benedict explains how these passages reveal the New Testament. For example, Isaiah 7:14, is a well known verse found during the season of Advent. It reads: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Emmanuel" (God with us). The Pope explains not only the "original historical context, but also how the mystery of Jesus Christ is reflected in it."The prophet, Isaiah, tells Ahaz the sign of the virgin and son, but the "mother and child remain a mystery to modern readers and perhaps even to the prophet himself" (pg. 50).So what does this passage from Isaiah have to do with Jesus? Read the book!I truly enjoyed this book and the other two volumes by Pope Benedict. My copy has plenty of underlining and notes in the margin. This book took longer to read than other 130 page books because I had to keep stopping and just reflecting on what I had just read! less

Great book, a quick read, but not ground-breaking like the first two installments.
