review 1: Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI is one of the leading intellectuals of our time. I have read several of his books, and I found this one to be as intelligent, well written and insightful as the others. This book, however, surpasses the others, in that it sets forth the foundations of Catholicism, and, indeed, of all Christianity. Benedict meticulously explains Scriptural passages and their different levels of meaning, and he convincingly demonstrates how Jesus Christ fulfilled what the prophets foretold. Benedict also provides the most comprehensive and intelligent "explanation" of Jesus' Divine and fully human natures, to the extent that such an extraordinary phenomenon can be explained. Further, the Emeritus Pope elucidates with great wisdom and clarity why Jesus' incarn... moreation, death and resurrection are the foundations of the Catholic faith, and he unapologetically tells us what me must do in order to win our salvation. This book is not an easy read, but it is well worth one's time and effort. I'm a life-long Catholic, educated in Catholic schools and university, and the book was challenging for me. Each page contained thoughts and ideas that I have never encountered before. A new world was opened for me. Now, in addition to faith, Benedict has provided me with the intellectual underpinnings of Catholicism, and he has persuaded me on an intellectual level, about the truth of the Catholic faith. I would not start with this book, if one does not have foundation in Catholicism, Christianity or the Bible. Now I understand why C.S. Lewis converted from the Anglican Church of England to Catholicism-he said, and I'm paraphrasing, that if Christianity is truth, then one must be a Catholic, since Catholicism traces its roots to Jesus Christ, and all other Christian sects are offshoots of Catholicism. Benedict illuminates that path. This is the only book that I've ever rated as five stars.
review 2: I was expecting great things from Pope Benedict XVI after reading the first part of this trilogy and I wasn't going to be disappointed. Let me just say that this book is excellent!IF you haven't read it because you think it's a 'Catholic' book then I implore you to put down any prejudice and just read it. Benedict has written these books in such a way so they become open and personal to all Christians. This book follows the ministry of Jesus during the Holy Week up to his crucifixion and resurrection. It's extremely well written and provides enough to make you think deeply and if needs be find out more yourself.Benedict provides a good depth of detail when it comes to looking at the Old Testament prophecies concerning. Consider Jesus and the colt, John implies that Jesus was 'put on' the donkey which ties up with Zadok and Nathan's enthronement of Solomon on David's mule in 1 Kings. A nice touch. If you haven't read this book then do, you won't be disappointed. less
