review 1: I won this book for free from the Goodreads Book Giveaway contest and really enjoyed it! I was especially intrigued by this novel because I lived in Keflavik for 2 years and was happy to "visit" some of my old stomping grounds again. I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the characters in this story but once again had a great deal of trouble with the names. I kept forgetting who was who and what their role was, which was a bit distracting, but that was my issue not Mr. Bates. I liked how all the plot lines truly brought these characters to life and kept me engaged throughout the novel. Iceland also brought a majestic, beautiful setting to this story, especially remembering how harsh the winters can be, let alone trying to travel from place to place while investigating cr... moreimes.
review 2: A laptop is missing from the Icelandic government and it contains incriminating and embarassing information. A wealthy and influential man has died in a hotel room while tied to his bed. A criminal returns home after incarceration in the Baltic and is quickly brought into the chase for the notebook. What Detective Gunna doesn't know is that all of this is related as she investigates the death of the wealthy and connected man, a missing hotel clerk, and a domimatrix who steals from her clients. The body count escalates while the weather sounds like a permanent polar vortex. Gunna is engaging and cheerfully determined while being consistently lied to by criminals, witnesses, and bureaucratic politicians. I enjoy this series because it's realistic and upbeat despite the gloominess of Iceland's weather. Certainly not as gloomy as the Inspector Erlendur series. less
