review 1: Cold Comfort features Gunnhildur “Gunna” Gisladottir, a police detective at Reykjavík’s Serious Crime Unit, in post-economic meltdown Iceland. Gisladottir and her team are tracking down a violent prison escapee and trying to solve the murder of a fitness expert/call girl with some well-connected friends. There are plenty of twists and turns as the plot unfolds and I was impressed with the motivations of the bad actors, which were basically sex and money but often nicely tied to the effects of the 2008 financial crisis.
review 2: The second story featuring Gunnhildur. Very enjoyable - Icelandic financial crash in the background (and affects the plot), but still rather more cheerful than a lot of Scandinavian crime fiction. Like the humour, like the main c... moreharacter (at last! a detective who doesn't seem to have a drink problem!) and the setting is well done too. Really hope this series continues. Oh, and the plot is intricate with quite a few surprises along the way! less
