review 1: This book did not bring me in and give me the strong feel of companionship I have experienced in other Drizzt books. I felt that Drizzt was too whiny, comparing everything and everyone to someone he knew in the past. Perhaps that is a problem with a very long lived tribe, but Drizzt is supposedly only two centuries old, much too young in his race's reckoning to be so maudlin.I didn't like Dahlia, and felt that she lived for self flagellation. Her relationship with her son was weird as well, although I perfectly understood that she would want to commit a sort of post-delivery abortion to the child of her rapist, the feelings and emotions behind the story of Dahlia were not well done. They felt distanced as if experienced from afar.I felt that Dahlia and Drizzt never really ... morehad a relationship, only a sexual sharing for bodily release. Her relationship may have had motives, and she may have loved him but it felt more like she wanted to own him, and it was pitiful.Effron I pitied, although he was bad, but so ineffective (although supposedly powerful). If the story had been focused more on him, it would probably have worked much better, but there were too many other side stories. The closing of the tale felt rushed, as if all the words were running out and needed to stop. There should have been less time spent on the broken relationship between Drizzt and Dahlia, and more spent on the closing. Overall, not one I will reread or recommend.
review 2: This series ended not with a bang, but with a whimper. Several of the early plot lines went nowhere, the ending was rushed and disjointed, and overall I was left feeling frustrated and unsatisfied. I've been a fan of the series from the start and it's sad to see Salvatore mail it in on this one, I guess the story just got away from him. One oddity I thought I'd note as well is that one of the blurbs on the jacket says "I am the Last Threshold, brink of dusk, harbinger of dawn. Drizzt Do'Urden and his companions may soon know my cool embrace." There is no reference to this "Last Threshold" anywhere in the novel and has literally no relationship whatsoever to the story. Weak sauce Salvatore, weak sauce. less
