review 1: The cover of this book appealed to me so I picked it up and I couldn't believe how amazing this book was. It was a humorous and fanatic adventure book of the life of a nanny pig. The writing is brilliant and the story is told with a dry humor and sarcasm that made this seem more like Lemony Snicket than Mary Poppins. Nanny P is not a good role model. She teaches her young charges things such as the fine art of signature forgery, theft, and property destruction. This is all couched in a fine humor and perhaps a lesson or two about valuing childhood for what it is, and recognizing that sometimes cockroach races can be even more important than long division. The book The Adventures of Nanny Piggins succeeds because of its humor, fine writing and wonderful read aloud flow. Nan... moreny Piggins is hilarious, and the adventures she and the children have are fantabulous. I would recommend reading this to students as a future educator.
review 2: The only word that really describes this book for me is *delightful*, which is a word I don't have enough opportunity to use! Nanny Piggins is a funny, silly and touching book about a nanny (who, yes, is a pig - and what a pig! Her favorite swear word? Bottom :)) and the three children she takes care of, along with their clueless, uptight father, a ex-circus bear, and other assorted characters (both literally and figuratively). I originally got this on the recommendation of Erica at What Do We Do All Day as a funny book for kids (her book suggestions have never steered me wrong) and I started reading it each night to my 5 year old. It was a little over his head so I finished it myself and enjoyed it thoroughly - and now I have the joy of knowing I get to read it again to both kids. Very recommended!*She knew Mr. Green would have no scruples about trying to get out of his side of the deal. Being a lawyer, he was professionally required to be morally bankrupt.**"Stamp collecting? That's not a hobby," protested Nanny Piggins. "Yes, it is," argued Michael. "I read about it in a book. People used to do it back in the olden days." "The things people used to do before television. It's heartbreaking," observed Nanny Piggins, shaking her head.**You see, if you insult people through compliments, by the time they figure out what you meant, you will have gone home so they cannot yell at you.**Nanny Piggins had instructed him to say this because it is always sensible to tell people what to think of you, in case they are too dim-witted to figure it out for themselves.* less
