review 1: At first I was disappointed because I was in the mood to read a romance. This is a fantasy book first with elements of romance. But I liked the fantasy story a lot and even more so, the political intrigue and maneuvering of the characters. Freyrik was almost too compassionate and patient at times. Also for a leader who was beloved by his people, he seemed out of touch with what they were thinking and feeling. He was just too distinctive a character at times. Having said that, he has some great lines and his love and passion for Ayden is believable. Oddly enough, I understood Ayden better even though he wasnt human. I worried that Ayden's love was Stockholm Syndrome because almost no one treats him well or without suspicion aside from Freyrik. They are both equally in terr... moreible positions and the necessary facades continually damage Ayden's trust. But overall I liked reading about these characters, I am emotionally invested and intrigued by the political games that seem like they will be more prevalent in the second book. A lot of violence in this book and the focus on defeating the Surge. I am hoping that the start of the human and elven war is better explained in the second book along with how the Ferals came to be. We are given two sides but not the whole story. I think the author did a great job of balancing suspense and plot progression as I felt the story was always moving and there were many moments when I was concerned at what I might find in the next few pages. I also have a thing for slave/master stories especially when the outward role differs so greatly from what happens behind closed doors. Off to buy the second book now.
review 2: Well i really loved this book but I had to take a star off for the ending. No spoilers but just be aware this is not a complete story its part one and part two is the next book, I was really invested in the book and characters and wanting to see how it ended and well, I didnt. Extremely disappointing, its just cliff hanger, read next one. But otherwise the story building was excellent. The world was so interesting and the story takes time to build it wasnt rushed. You see the story from both main characters and can see both sides and root for both of them. Welp now I gotta download the next one! less
