Hex Hall
review 1: I bought this book earlier this year on a bit of a whim. I heard a few booktubers talk about it and it intrigued me so I decided to pick it up. Hex Hall is about a girl who goes by the name of Sophie Mercer. After casting a disastrous spell and almost being outed as being a witch, she is forced to attend a boarding school called Hecate Hall which is a school for magical beings. Once Sophie gets to this school, she realises that everything isn't as it seems. There are mysterious killings happening in the school and it's up to Sophie to try and find out who the killer is and what they want.I started this book while I was waiting for my copy of The Retribution to come in the post. I wanted something fast paced and fun and that is exactly what I got. This book had me hooked fr... moreom the first couple pages and I definitely enjoyed it. It was a very quick read for me as I managed to finish it in two sittings. The book managed to keep me interested until the last page and now after finishing it, I will definitely be buying the next book in the series. However, what I will say is that this book is a little cliché and predictable at times. This book really picked up in the last 100 pages or so and that is when things got super interesting and unexpected. I just couldn't put the book down as all I wanted to do was keep reading and know what was going to happen next. Our protagonist, Sophie is hilarious and fun. She is sarcastic and whitty and I grew to truly like her. She is strong willed and she stands up for what she believes in. Next, we have Jenna who is Sophie's best friend and also the outcast of the school. She is quite lonely and guarded before she meets Sophie but then she manages to open up and we see a different side to her. The love interest in this book is Archer Cross, the school bad boy. I wasn't completely sold on Archer in this book. He didn't annoy me but he also didn't make me giddy either. He was just there. I hope that in the next two books I'm able to form an actual opinion on him. The antagonist is a girl called Elodie. I found that she was a typical mean girl as she was pretty, mean and she had the guy that every girl wanted. She also had her two sidekicks, Anna and Chaston. I truly disliked her character and I never warmed to her at all to be honest.I give this book a 4/5 because it was fast paced and easy to read which was what I was looking for when I read this book. I recommend this book to those who like paranormal/witch books which are fun, light and quick to read.
review 2: This book was an okay start to the series. The most notable part of this book was that it wasn't the typical "Girl gets thrown into a world she knows nothing about and has a superpower" type of fantasy book, which I really enjoyed. I liked that Sophie knew about her abilities, even if she wasn't really aware of how to use them. Some of the first-person narrative was sloppy, but once Sophie got into her voice as a narrator, the novel picked up. I really liked the friendship between Sophie and Jenna and seeing Sophie's fear of what Jenna could possibly do to her, but knowing Jenna wouldn't hurt her because they are such good friends. I liked the majority of the mythology, but I think it was too heavily focused on witches when it could have looked at the werewolves, faes, and vampires as well. I think having more information about the other mythological creatures that are in the novels would have really expanded the world. There is also a lack of world-building in the sense that we get some of the background information about why Hex Hall was created, but not why it expanded to include these other mythological creatures. I would have really liked to know what the classes taught specifically, but Sophie was too focused on anything and everything but her classes to offer much insight into what they teach at Hex Hall. Also, it is never really explained how the Council hides the fact that there are witches et al from the rest of the world after the incidents that bring these students to Hex Hall. It was a little vague on a lot of the details.Overall, the book laid the foundation for the series, but there could have been more world-building to explain the situation rather than just by saying "magic." less

This is both the best and worst type of YA book. High school setting, one aloof, attractive, unattainable male, bitchy popular girls doing bitchy popular girl things, even a school dance scene where the heroine gets to blow everyone away with her secret hidden beauty. But with MAGIC. I'd love to feel superior and say I hated it but, not gonna lie, it was AWESOME.Sophie Mercer has been living with her mother for 16 years, moving from place to place every time her inconvenient witch-ness is revealed. However, when a love spell goes terribly wrong, Sophie is forced to go to Hecate Hall, a boarding school for the Prodigum - the witches, shape-shifters and faeries of the world, and one vampire student, Jenna, who Sophie happens to be rooming with. But the school has recently been shaken up by the death of dark witch Holly, Jenna's former room-mate, who seemingly died from blood loss...As I said, this book has a lot of cliches: it's essentially just a high school film plot-line with a some paranormal twists. However, I really liked it. The characters were all really likable, and although the popular girls were initially branded as pure evil, they became increasingly rounded over the course of the book, meaning that everything wasn't in unrealistic black and white morality. I liked the magic system, not in the sense of the magic itself, but in the sense of the system of categorising magical beings, which will hopefully go on with future books. Nothing new, but done pretty well. Plus I'm a sucker for these sort of stories. I love those damn secret hidden beauty scenes.

Let me ask you a question. What do you get when you take two spoon fulls of Harry potter, one spoon of Vampire academy,a drop of Mean girls and a pinch of Twilight? BAM!!! You get Hex hall.Don't get me wrong,it was an easy read.I finished this book within 4 hours, but that's it.It was somewhat funny. But all the while the ghost of above mentioned books lingered like a bad breath.Oh,I forgot to mention the Anna and the French Kiss series. You can add half cup of that in the mixture.Come on Rachel.Be original for once :3
