review 1: This book finds Harper struggling to keep her fledgling relationship with David afloat and juggle a newfound friendship with her ex-boyfriend Ryan. Ryan is the easygoing sort so male jealousy isn’t a problem. Female jealousy, on the other hand…The complications to Harper’s life mount. Even as people tell her she can’t manage everything, she is a phenomenal multitasker. She’s not going to let anything deter her in her efforts to manage being a Paladin, dutiful daughter, high-ranking student and loving girlfriend. She has a backbone of steel cloaked under a deceptively demure temper. Even while I was wishing she would punch the supercilious Alexander through a wall, she manages to hold on to her ire with the grace of the genteel Southern girl she is.The story is fr... moreaught with tension, most of it coming from the mundane life around her rather than her Paladin duties. This achieves a fine balance in this novel, showing that difficulties come from all aspects that life throws at you, not just necessarily the supernatural ones. However, this book had one major flaw and that is the over-usage of the word “weird”. I counted no less than 40 instances of this word or variations of it, sprinkled throughout this book like confetti on a parade float, and it got to the point where it was a serious irritation. I am taking into account the fact that this is an advance uncorrected galley and may undergo extensive changes before the final print. Hopefully, the substitution of other perfectly good adjectives for “weird” will be one of those alterations. That nagging detail aside, this novel is a terrific continuation in this series and ends on an ambiguous note that is certain to leave Ms. Hawkins’s fans begging for more.
review 2: Just as deliciously snarky and delightful as the first one. We get some questions answered and we get a whole hell of a lot more questions. I'm being vague on purpose, I don't want to spoil anyone. I was a bit irritated with the sneaky sneaky things Harper did to David, but I sort of understand why she did them. The ending is mildly upsetting, but I'm definitely intrigued about the potential for the next book. {And there better be another book.}All in all, a quick and fun read. less
