review 1: Ew! My piano teacher gave weekly ratings (excellent, very good, good, and if you really stunk it up she'd give you a fair). Just before I managed to stop taking lessons ( which I still regret ) she broke new ground and pronounced my lesson LOUSY. She was right. I hadn't thought of those dismal performances for decades, but Flamethrower brought that to mind; a rambling, atonal story without rhythm or melody, just muddling along without any artistic direction. The half hour Mrs Mauer spent with me in that church basement had to have been fingers on the chalkboard misery! Now I know her pain. 1.0 stars.
review 2: It's fortunate that the only remotely likable/sympathetic character in this novel is its protagonist. Surrounded by manipulative and shallow members of
... morethe NYC art world in 1977, Reno comes to a lot of very cynical and bitter realizations about "life" like the following bit of nonsense: "It was wanting something a great deal that made people embarrassing--which was why I'd hidden my wants around Sandro and his friends." Everyone she trusts or desires turns out totally unworthy of her esteem and, perhaps, the patience of a reader? less

mixed feelings; at time intriguing; other times seemed to just plod along ... not sure what to say.

Excellent. Reno feels disconnected from herself, but ultimately I think it works in this book.

Fantastic! One of the most deliciously written novels I have ever read.

I liked this until the end, when I have no idea what happened.
