review 1: I had been putting off reading this for a very long time. Don't get me wrong, I love fantasy and epic mythical animals but something about this book just didn't do it for me. Maybe its because of how easily Kes was able to use her magic? How it was not very aweinspiring? Maybe because the griffin fire mage didn't fall in love with Kes? Who knows. I'm a die hard fantasy fan. Action and magic and epicness is the reason I read fantasy. However deep down inside I always am looking for that romantic relationship between the main character and and the one that changes everything. All in all it was a pretty good book with the epicness of griffins.

... moree up. The author falls victim to the noob-fantasy-writer's trap of giving all of her characters 'fantasy names'- and the hideously long names that she seems to have chosen by sticking a pin into the alphabet made this book unreadable. My eyes skipped over names with 20+ letters and far too many vowels, and I soon lost track of who was who. The flat main character held no interest for me either. Pity. less
