review 1: Lt. Col. Peters is known for his insightful essays and books on international policy - all with a conservative eye. This is his first bit of fiction, I believe. I have read many, perhaps too many books, about the pivotal battle in the American Civil War. It is written in a sparse journalistic style and describes the battle from the point of view of many different characters on both sides. His character analysis is interesting as well as the application of known historical accounts of the individuals. One must remember this is fiction, but his description of men such as Gen. Dan Sickles, the infamous political animal who disobeyed orders and overextended his troops only to have them annihilated the second day, but was saved reputation-wise when his leg was taken off by... more a cannon ball. His battle field descriptions are a bit thin, if anything he tries to cover too much, but overall a good read. Does not measure up to Killer Angels however.
review 2: Having read many fiction and non-fiction books on Gettysburg, includimg "Gettsyburg" by Stephen Sears and "The Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara among them I was extremely gripped by this book. While "Killer Angels" depicted the involved general's thoughts "Cain" depicted not only the general's thoughs but common soldiers as well. General Meade was more widely covered, the stratgies discussed and the horrible bloodshed was really brought to life like none other books I have read. less

Good read for a professor of American History and, in particular, the American Civil War.
