review 1: I had high hopes for this one.I give it three stars because it was a fun read as military thrillers go. The writing kept the tension nice and taut throughout the tale and it kept me wondering about just how it would end.Its treatment of Christianity lost it a star in the rating. It seemed like Peters and his characters didn't really understand Christianity. I don't mean the Military Order of Brothers in Christ, the neo-crusaders who wage a war of genocide against Muslims ---they obviously don't get Christianity --- but even his sympathetic and Christian characters don't seem to understand their professed religion. The first example of this is in the main character's (Flintlock) self-description of himself as a 'Sermon on the Mount Christian' as opposed to a 'Book of Revela... moretion Christian.' In fact he later dismisses Revelation as nonsense 'written by a nut.' Cafeteria Christianity, anyone? Then there is Garcia, the Catholic Marine with the tattoo of the Virgin of Guadalupe on his forearm who doesn't know She is The Virgin Mary. WT*!And then there is a Catholic priest who advises a soldier who has been abandoned by his wife 'not to hide behind Church Dogma' if he should happen to meet 'a nice lady.'You'll get some exciting bang! bang! for your buck in this tale but no deep thoughts on either the religions it sets at war or even religion itself.
review 2: I've read this book twice now and even purchased the audiobook. I love the way Ralph Peters writes a story. The War After Armageddon is about a holy war, set not too far in the future. After the US is attacked by extreme Islamic forces the new President reorganizes the military into MOBIC. Essentially it's a christian army. The Marines and Army are still around but the advanced weapons are given to MOBIC and the Marine's are shipped out to basically support MOBIC. Drones replace F-16's in almost all cases and due to radio jamming, the military isn't able to communicate very well. This creates a confusing ground war that the US troops aren't used to fighting. I found it very realistic and equally terrifying. The characters are all very well drawn out and I grew attached to several of them. Constant suspense, thrilling action scenes and gut wrenching betrayals makes this one of my favorite books. I know some reviewers have stated this war will never happen, but I'd argue it's been going on for centuries now. I really hope it never gets to this point though. A scary look at the future, indeed. Thank you for a great read Mr. Peters. less

Good read. Gives a forecast of what the future may hold for the Middle East.

Had the potential to be awesome, but didn't quite develop in a good way

Good story, but you have to get past the military jargon.
