review 1: While at first I was skeptical due to the occasionally flowery language and title in and of itself that lead me to think of new age self-help manuals and a the various groups that consider themselves to be "Born Again" after some mystical happening. I was not prepared for any such thing to happen. And luckily it didn't, but it certainly was mystical, but somehow more real than a non-fiction read ever feels. Somehow in the brevity of a few pages, each short story brings you to feel tangible emotion and whatever weird, unworldly scenario going on as perfectly normal. You empathize with these characters Ausubel has created, their shortfalls and all and are left in awe.
review 2: The cover is gorgeous and compelling and the first story a home run indeed. Author
... mores like Ausubel are proving that magical realism is no longer mastered only by South American writers--in fact, it might just be the new text for the American female writer to platform herself. Strange things do happen in these stories, and the surreal territory is easy to accept but what what Ausubel does best is capture human emotion: desire, confusion, envy, curiosity, grief, and I could go on. It really is a guide to being born, as it is also a guide to living and dying alike. less

Very weird stories. Very weird. The guy who sprouts shelves in his stomach is bizarre.

I'd give this 4.5 stars for being a bit formulaic by the end (absurdity, on repeat).

Pitch-perfect, unique, and filled with wonder. A collection that felt like home.
