review 1: This story of an isolated Jewish village in Romania reads like an allegory or fable. The villagers decide to save themselves from the encroaching war (WWII) by starting a new world. They throw out their clocks, traditions, and question all ways of being. New possibilities open up about what it means to be a family, a daughter, a friend. The story has the feel of a fable: The main characters have names but most villagers are described by their occupations; it's told in first person but there's no way our narrator could know all that's described. We have the sense that the story exists everywhere at once. One of the aspects I enjoyed reading most was the process of starting "new". In this time of dystopia as a hot genre, it was interesting to read about a community just start... moreing the process of deciding what to keep and what to let go from their culture. I found this completely consuming and, at times, totally disturbing. It's not for everyone - certainly not for those looking for straight WWII history stories. This is much more - a story of family, faith, culture, and our roles therein.
review 2: "Truth is not in facts. The truth is in the telling."I loved this book and I hated this book. This book made me smile and it made me cry. I feel that this story depicts the life of a person truer than any book I think I've ever read. The amount of selflessness that is needed to pass a child into the next world is overwhelming, but indeed it is how we all go on no matter what point in our lives it takes place. We will always carry the story of how we came to be, it will always be true to us who lived it and we will always have the power to pass that truth on to others as long as we open our mouths and tell the story. less

I'm a third of the way through and this book is too weird for me to even continue.

Poetic writing but felt pretty uninspired by te characters for the most part.

I gave it two-hundred(-plus) pages, and I can't make it any further.
