review 1: On to the next project, and a (smidge) closer to Kyoko and Ren finally having a romantic something...The Dark Moon arc has finally ended, and Kyoko is on her way to the wrap-up party when a costar offers to pay for a full makeover. Once again, a little makeup and a stunning outfit turn Kyoko into a completely different person; Ren hides his jealousy by lecturing her on her professionalism. Both Kyoko and Ren must be careful though, because the LME president has a new project that will bring them closer than they have ever been before.A good filler, but we all know we're waiting for Ren to just make a move already. I'm curious about the new Cain siblings, and I'm eager to see how this particular character parameter works for them.On to volume 30!
review 2: Yay,
... morewe're finally back to Kyoko and Ren's relationship! And we finally get to know what this mysterious project is that Ren has to be Cain Heel for! The past few volumes had gotten a little tedious, so this one was a welcome relief. It's interesting to see Kyoko's inner thought process when it comes to Ren. Obviously, she can finally tell that she's starting to have feelings for him. Unfortunately, Kyoko's gut reaction is still to block those kinds of emotions, and so she responds by avoiding Ren while not in character, by getting mad at him, and by provoking fights with him. This doesn't always go as Kyoko plans, but at leasts she's reacting to Ren finally. It's fun to see other guys reacting to Kyoko, too, and Ren's subsequent reactions as well. Kijima is kind of smarmy, but well-intentioned at least. His makeover of Kyoko was rather remarkable, and I love the way he matter-of-factly decided that since she's his type when dressed like that, they should date. Kyoko's disbelief was funny, and I loved how Ren pretended not to hear the exchange, but then stole her away under false pretenses, then scolded her for letting Kijima do those kind of things for her. I'm not sure Kyoko interpreted Ren's "you're too innocent" speech correctly, but at least they're both recognizing that there's something between them. I also loved the boys from the tv show telling Kyoko she looked beautiful. Maybe if more and more people tell her, she'll finally start to believe it.I'm still not quite sure what the president has up his sleeve, but he seems to want the same thing as Ren: he and Kyoko together. He's just not going about that in a way that Ren wants or likes or can even figure out.Cain Heel and Setsuka. I'm still not sure why they need Ren to play Cain in order for him to play Black Jack. Maybe because Ren's image is too sweet? Anyways, I love the interaction between "Cain" and "Setsuka", and the way they project each other. Of course his costar, Murasame, things Setsuka is gorgeous and Cain is intimidating. Cain flipping out over Murasame ogling Setsuka and ruining his plan not to speak Japanese was interesting, and I'm curious to see how this power struggle will play out. Also, I loved the little cameo from Sho Fuwa! Yes, he would flip out if he had seen Kyoko dressed like that. I have to admit, I kinda miss that guy. less
