A love like this

Today has always been a special day for my family, we don’t celebrate much but my grandparent’s anniversary was always a spectacle. On this day in 1947 two high school sweet hearts, said “I do”.

I tend to be sceptic when it comes to matters of the heart but I can’t deny what I have seen. I recall my grandparents love story with such nostalgia, thanks to their epic story telling skills they reminisced painting their sweet memories of their courting days to us on Saturday mornings.

They spoke of trips on the trams to the bioscope where my Gran would ask only for an apple but indulge in her unspoken share of his chocolate. How they loved to get all dolled up and head to the Dance where they owned the floor like Fred Astair and Ginger Rogers where to spite her future Mother in law she would leave her mark, of bright red lips on my Grandfathers shoulder.

One of my most precious memories is having watched them dance to a few years ago, my Grandfather supporting his wife’s frail frame safely in his embrace as they danced to Frank Sinatra in the living room still with such loving eyes.

Till the end there was no doubt of the abundance of love, admiration and respect they had for each other as they called “Yes, Darling” from the other room. Like Ying and Yang they remained there for each other giving where the other could no longer..

I have been privileged to have witnessed them grow old together, though their presence is highly missed over these three years as mile stones we wish they would have seen and been a part of pass everyday.. We celebrate them on what would have been their SEVENTH anniversary and relish in the blessing it has been to have known them and witness the example they were to us in love, faith and unity.

I pray that they unite again in paradise that they continue to dance to the most angelic melody as “Soul mates always end up together..”
