review 1: I'm not sure about this book. I was sure waiting for something different, something with a bit of a Wallander flare. This is not a suspense or a mystery novel, neither it is a thriller. It's a fictional account of what could have been the life of a real person, a Swedish lady who owned a whore house in Maputo around 1904. She really existed as documented in official tax documents and a photograph, but who she was and how she came to be is a mystery. Through speculation, the author then creates a possible (?) story of her life while painting an interesting picture of old Mozambique while focusing on the strained relationships between "the blacks" and "the whites".
review 2: Hannah shares many of Wallander's traits : few close friends, a feeling of not belonging
... more anywhere, a peculiar lifestyle, a lack of emotional stability... Henning Mankell masters his characters. The description of colonial Africa is sometimes too simplistic, the links between Hannah's fate and Africa colonial history could have been subtler but I enjoyed this book and was hooked enough to read it in a couple of days. less

A strange book that didn't really engage me. Maybe it was the translation that didn't work.
