I’m a sucker for a good heist story, and one of the fundamental elements that separates good heist tales from bad is clearly defining the roles of each team member. Knowing exactly what part every person plays orients the audience, and communicates the stakes of each individual moment. In a heist film, the heist is usually painstakingly laid out early in the movie, with the point man taking the players, and the audience, through every piece of the plan. But comic books don’t have the luxury of time afforded a two hour movie, and so it’s doubly impressive that Charles Soule and Angel Unzueta’s Poe Dameron 22 manages to create such a thrilling heist, with clear roles and interesting stakes, in the limited confines of a single comic book issue.
Leia Organa is leading a small group of Resistance fighters in an effort to free Lor San Tekka from the vaults of Baron Maccon, hoping that San Tekka might be able to help them locate her brother Luke Skywalker. And I’m going to stop right there because to detail more of the plan and the way it unfolds would be to spoil Soule and Unzueta’s excellent work. Suffice it to say, as the heist progresses there are elements I never would have guessed, and expertly placed surprises that keep things exciting from start to finish.
I admit that in my mind there’s always a little bit of bias when I’m reading a Star Wars comic or other Expanded Universe story, like somehow the films are canon and everything else is lesser. But Poe Dameron 22 is not just great by the measure of a Star Wars Expanded Universe spin-off, it’s a great Star Wars story, full stop.
