A few months ago I reviewed the second book, Dragonswood, in a series by Janet Lee Carey. I wanted to backtrack and read the first one, Dragon’s Keep, because I don’t like to read books out of order. Dragonswood read like a stand alone but I thought that Dragon’s Keep may add something to the story, however, I was disappointed.

The Plot
The story begins with the royal family of Wilde Island, more specifically the princess, Rosalind. Rosalind is special for a couple of reasons. One, she was born with a dragon’s claw instead of a finger on one hand and two, she is destined to fulfill a 600 year old prophecy that claims her family will be restored to their rightful throne and there will be peace with the dragons. However, everything is thrown into chaos when Rosalind is kidnapped by a dragon, taken to his home on an island and forced to care for his children. As the story progresses the princess grows and learns more about the plight of the dragons, her family and herself. Will Rosalind escape and become the Queen she’s meant to be? My Thoughts
I did not enjoy this book but it’s not because it was a bad book. My first issue is the target age audience seems to change between this book and Dragonswood. I would say that Dragon’s Keep is for around the ages of 10-13, while Dragonswood is more 13-18. I’ve said this before, but I believe you can read any book you want regardless of the targeted age group, however, it was bit too childish for me to enjoy. My second issue is it was just boring. This is a fairly short book and it took me way longer than it should have to read it because I couldn’t get into it. My third issue is the “love” story. It’s one of those love at first sight situations where you know they’re going to end up married by the end of the book, and they do. However, I’m sure it was written this way to appeal to younger readers which I do understand.
Overall, this isn’t a bad book but Dragonswood was much more enjoyable to me. This book really didn’t add anything to the story and honestly I would just skip it.
