Book Review: The Book Thief

[Yeah. I do reviews too. But only when I feel like.]

HERE IS A SMALL FACT

You are going to die.

1939. Nazi Germany.

The country is holding its breath. Death has never been busier.

Liesel, a nine-year-old girl, is living with a foster family on Himmel Street. Her parents have been taken away to a concentration camp. Liesel steals books. This is her story and the story of the inhabitants of her street when the bombs begin to fall.

SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION

This novel is narrated by Death.

It’s a small story, about: a girl, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist fighter and quite a lot of thievery.

ANOTHER THING YOU SHOULD KNOW

Death will visit the Book Thief three times.

First, can we just applaud the format of this book? It’s narrated by Death, like aforementioned, and is split into parts which are further split into what you can call chapters. Funny, witty, cynical, and sarcastic comments are made by Death throughout the entire book, put in bold and have interesting titles.

I first heard of The Book Thief a long time ago, every book lover has. A friend of mine actually had the book but kept forgetting to lend it to me. Then one day I was scrolling through Wattpad when someone mentioned the beginning of the book.

How can someone in their right mind not be immediately attracted by this? I mean, ugh!

From beginning to end, this book attracted me. I loved reading about Liesel, her foster parents, Rudy, Max, and every other character in this wonderfully crafted book.

[Unfortunately, I can’t go more than this for spoiler sakes.]

Before I end though, I need to mention something.

Saumensch – Swine (female)

Rudy and Liesel. Liesel and Rudy. The Book Thief and Jesse Owens. The Bread Giver and the Word Shaker (you’ll get the references when you read the book lol).

Can I just… ahhhhh!

I think I’ve (finally) found my OTP.

Enticed you enough? Good. Everybody with two eyes and a brain and average literary skills should go and read this book.

5/5 stars. (This is such a rare occurrence. The book is that good.)

PS: Can I just deviate from the book for a second to say thank you?! Five likes on this blog? Really??? I’m just doing this for fun, and I’m so happy you guys actually like this.
