Camagüey, Dec 26 – When René Estevan Arredondo came to the Meteorological Center of Camagüey, after concluding his General Military Service, positions for his specialty of Average Technician in Meteorology did not exist, so he chose to remain there as custodian, so was his passion for the science that it re-defined his life.
His history and his humble origin are examples of how an illusion can turn intoreality when there is chased with determination, how the way of the knowledge is never too long and less in Cuba, a country where a university education or a scientific grade do not turn out to be privileges for elites.
Doctor of Sciences since2010, directed for several years the Group of Atmospheric Optics of the mentioned institution, and the branch of the Meteorological Society of Cuba in Camagüey province, and although today he is already not linked to the center, his work there has marked him forever.
“Interested in the work with the radars and in the phenomena of the nature, even from the guard position, he exchanged with the specialists and learned, until I managed to link meas observer, and later to study the university in form ofeducation for workpeople”, told to the ACN.
René became an electrical engineer in the house of high studies of Camagüey, while his interest and knowledge was increasing for the science of the ambience.
Of those years, he remembersproudly the task at the station of the laser radar (LIDAR), the only one in Cuba, with technology of the ancient Soviet Union, and also the only one of the Caribbean Sea that measured the presence of aerosols in the atmosphere of the region, after the eruption of the volcano Pinatubo, in 1991.
Located in the Philippines, the crater sent to the troposphere a load of particles that covered the world, had a blockade effect in the solar radiation on the terrestrial surface and provoked a decrease of a Celsius grade in Cuba, between 1991 and 1993.
Beyond those who every day communicate the report of the time in the means, the meteorologists are usually rather anonymous scientists, but the honeys of the vanity never sweetened René, and for this natural simplicity that characterizes him, the measurements of the happened with the Pinatubo constitute the first milestone that he hoards of his career.
“Although they turn out to be slightly perceptible for the population in general, these changes affect the development of the plants, the yield of the cultivation and other natural cycles of the planet like the warming or the characteristics of the stations”, he told.
The study of the impact of the cloud of aerosols of the Pinatubo in the solar radiation on the Cuban archipelago, turned out to be the topic of his thesis of doctorate, guided by the doctor Juan Carlos Antuña Marrero, also investigator of the Meteorological Center of the oriental territory.
René Estevan took part the same way for many years in the study of the trails of dust that in the summer move from the Sahara desert, in Africa, up to the Caribbean Sea, which in addition to blocking the incidence of the solar beams, transport microorganisms harmful to the health.
“The LIDAR stopped working in 1997, but it was replaced in 2008 with a solar photometer of the brand CIMEL, assigned to the Iberian Network of Measurement of Aerosols (HEAP), thanks to the cooperation with the Group of Atmospheric Optics of the University of Valladolid, Spain”, he added.
At present, René collaborates with the Geophysical Institute of Peru, in the Observatory of Huancayo, in order to raise the level of the scientific investigation in the Andean nation, where in 2015 he studied a post-doctoral scholarship for the study of atmospheric aerosols in the Valle del Rio Mantaro.
Although he prefers to speak about his work and not about himself, his experience turns out to be an example of professional and personal overcoming and indicates that it is possible to become what everybody who proposes it, without limiting itself before what “meant for him” by hazard.
“Knowledge and overcoming are the best weapons that the human being possesses to face life, and they will never be sufficient for me”, he concluded.(Adelante)
