review 1: I saw this at the library today, and while I do own it, I checked it out. My copy is hopelessly buried in a 35-year comic collection. This third read-through of the book brought a smile to my face. So many good lines, a turnip as a prison, gorgeous Mignola artwork. Everything comes together. Every line and every panel has a whiff of lunacy, a geometry of the askew that tickles my chaos bone just fine.
review 2: Wow, I was surprised how much I liked this book! Not that I was expecting to hate it or anything, but I wasn't expecting it to be this fun and compelling. I've never been a huge follower of Hellboy, I've read the random Mignola comic here and there, but I never followed him closely. I liked his art style, but never really looked closely into the content o
... moref his storytelling. But now I want to check out the Hellboy books much more. Maybe if I hadn't been as surprised as often by the book I wouldn't have liked it as much, I don't know. When I realized Screw-On Head was just a one-shot, not a series, I instantly liked it a whole lot more. It showed the guts to come up with a fun idea, work it out, then leave it behind without milking it. Ballsy. Emperor Zombie's proposal to the mute vampire woman was really sweet and a little touching, just like the story about the friendship (lovers' relationship?) between the wizard and the snake. There was an underlying sweetness and humanity that took the stories beyond mere gothy, steampunky, contrived whimsicality. I loved the Abu Gung story, it was a great mix of fable, creepy factor, Victorian pseudo-anthropology, fake ancient myth, etc. The Abu Gung character was super cool, a badass little boy--half-Bolivian-Incan, half tribal Southeast Asian, a neat hero character. The story of the Martians worked for me, even though on a cranky day I might have hated it as a piece of steampunk sci-fi. But the light-handed treatment of everything, the funniness, redeemed any potential shortcomings. That'll teach me to pre-judge things before reading them! (No it won't. I'll probably keep being a pre-judging asshole, I never learn shit.) less

Think it's a weird hero yet also an interesting one, still wishing that I knew more about the head.
