review 1: Another fascinating murder mystery from SJ Bolton- I had read all her other books before this one- so this one was out of order. Dead Scared was the Lacey Flint book before Lost (aka Like This Forever). Some of the characters from prior books reappeared (which I liked), and the awkward relationship between Lacey Flint, young detective, and Mark Joesbury (more senior detective) continued to develop. Lacey goes undercover at Cambridge, where an unusual number of suicides occurred in recent years, charged with keeping her eyes and ears open. But rather than remaining passive, she gets involved with the most recent failed suicide, a missing student, a hazing incident, a handsome doctor, a belligerent local farmer, a lost dog, and much more. There are some minor annoyances... more- I thought the mystery could have been solved sooner and fewer people would have gotten hurt, if some of the players had shared information sooner. But maybe that is too much to expect of the characters, who had reasons to distrust each other, since there are some truly creepy, evil characters (as is typical), masquerading as decent people. Highly recommended.
review 2: A good read in a very British sort of way. Intriguing while not exactly thrilling. And a heroine one would love to root for. Its chick-lit in the crime novel mode. What jars, however, is the abrupt (putting it lightly) climax. In fact, there's no climax. While the reader expects the horrendous villains to get their just deserts, all there is is sappy romantic talk. The poor end takes away one star. less
