Dealings with Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede

Synopsis

Cimorene is anything but the ideal Princess. Most princesses her age are being kidnapped by dragons or busy being betrothed or getting snatched up by Princes, but, contrary to the norm, Cimorene kidnaps herself and becomes the Princess of a dragon by choice. After her father tries to force her into marriage, Cimorene whisks herself away to have many adventures that surely don’t involve boys (well…) nor marriage. But, what happens when an evil wizard discovers her? Will she be able to save her new friends?

I have to say that I was disappointed in this book. It’s not that the story was bad. It’s not that the writing was bad. In fact, I don’t think it was the book’s fault at all. The sole contribution to my lack of enjoyment was the fact that I was just too old for this story. If I had found this series when I was about 13, I have a feeling it would have changed my life. However, being older, this book felt too preach-y (in-your-face) for me.

I think this would be a great series for middle-grade readers, but since I’m 25, I didn’t find much enjoyment in the tone of the story. There was just too much simplistic language and an abundance of telling that I wouldn’t have minded when I was younger but which hindered my interest reading this as an adult.

There were lots of good things happening in the story and many fun concepts that were explored in depth and thoroughly. I didn’t find any consistency errors nor any parts of the story that didn’t make sense or didn’t fit in. As a whole, I felt that Wrede wrote an interesting story that is sure to captivate young readers. I’m sure the rest of the series explores many of the same concepts and further investigates Cimorene’s adventures even more. Although I’m mildly curious about what happened to all these wholesome characters, I don’t foresee myself reading any more of this series. It didn’t draw me in quite enough for that.

Overall, this is a fun read, but I definitely recommend it for a younger audience. It’s not that this book was bad, it’s just that it wasn’t for me.
