A feature that helps you finally declutter your TBR shelf.
This was started by the wonderful Lia @ Lost in a Story whose blog you should definitely check out!
How it works:
- Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
- Order on ascending date added.
- Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
- Read the synopses of the books
- Decide: keep it or should it go?
Current count of books on my to-read shelf is… 582. Which is a lot. So let’s get rid of some of them (hopefully, sometimes I massively fail)!
1. The Assassin’s Curse (The Assassin’s Curse #1) by Cassandra Rose ClarkeThis was all the rage back in the day – it’s a story about PIRATES and it’s a YA Fantasy. I really don’t know much about this one, and it’s kind of hard to find it. However, I am going to keep this one on here, just in case I ever feel like pirates!
Verdict: I am keeping you
2. Written in Red by Anne BishopAgain, this was hugely popular back in the day on Booktube. This is a Urban Gantasy series, and I used to be really into Urban Fantasy, but now I kind of hate it, so I am gonna say goodbye to this one.
Verdict: Goodbye
3. Notes from the Midnight Driver by Jordan SonnenblickThis has been dubbed the YA “Tuesdays with Morrie” which really suits my interest. It’s about a boy who has to do community service in a retirement home and has to spend time with a grumpy old man. It’s definitely up my alley, so it’s staying.
Verdict: I am keeping you
4. The Winner’s Curse by Marie RutkoskiThe hype for this has really died down, but this is still something that really interests me. This is a YA Fantasy but without magic, and it has a lot of court politics (supposedly) and features a kick ass heroine who DOESN’T fight. I am all about that.
Verdict: I am keeping you
5. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay KristoffStill one of the most unique books out there. I don’t think that using mixed media to convey a story is anything new, but a story that’s told entirely through letters, and texts and audio recordings sounds really interesting. I am mostly interested in seeing whether or not this story stands on it’s own, but yeah, I still want to read it.
Verdict: I am keeping you
6. The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae CarsonThis is another YA Fantasy that everyone loves, and it’s supposedly one of the best YA Fantasy books out there. BUT I was never really interested in this one, and I have no idea what is the basic premise of it, and I don’t think I’ll ever really read this. So yeah.
Verdict: Goodbye
7. In the Woods by Tana FrenchThis is a thriller series that follows a different case in each book and also different detectives. So it’s sort of a literary thriller, and it focuses both on the case, but also the detectives lives. It’s set in Dublin as well and it’s giving me major Broadchurch vibes. I am really happy about that and I really need to read this.
Verdict: I am keeping you
8. Fables, Vol. 1: Legends in Exile (Fables #1) by Bill Willingham, Lan Medina, Steve Leialoha, Craig Hamilton and James JeanOkay, so this is a HUGE comic book series about fairytales, so it features characters like the Big Bad Wolf and what not, and it’s like a twist on folklore and fairytales. While the premise is still cool, this is too big of a commitment, and I am already in the middle of ton of comic book series.
Verdict: Goodbye
9. The Devil’s Intern by Donna HosieI have no idea where I found this, but it’s absolutely brilliant. It’s about a guy who is the Devil’s Intern and hell is getting overcrowded and he is annoyed. His best friends are a Viking, a woman from the 1960s and a woman from the 17th century. Brilliant. It sounds like it’s TOO much fun.
Verdict: I am keeping you
10. Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan CainThis is a non fiction book all about introverts and it’s something that really interests me, both from the psychologist point of view and an introvert point of view. I have to read this soon, I completely forgot about it.
Verdict: I am keeping you
I feel like I am kind of failing at the decluttering part, however, I am discovering long forgotten books and I am not mad about it.
The overall tally:Total books removed since I started: 16
Current number of books on the to-read shelf: 579
Thanks for reading, let me know your thoughts on these books if you have read any of them!
