Over the weekend, my parents and I supported my brother by going to his first solo exhibit. Being an artist myself, I learned the value of artists supporting fellow artists the hard way. Sweat, money, passion and creative energy go into every single form of art. We have a wealth of talent in this country, and the culture of artists taking advantage of other artists has to die.
To be honest, I don’t know how to conduct myself in this kind of events. In California, we took advantage of taking photos of the artworks, taking photos with the artworks and even tried to experience the artworks if possible. However, knowing that these pieces are for sale, I wasn’t sure if taking pictures and posting them online was a good way of showing my support.
One of the paintings resonated in me, not only because it looks like a scene from a movie, but because of how the subject was portrayed. I observed that all of the paintings showcased the subject being still or calm in its environment, except for one. You can see the painting that I’m referring to in the photo below.
Everlost is a set of paintings telling the story of finding one’s home. After seeing the subject take root in its environment, this painting strikes because the viewer is positioned behind the subject, and you see the subject in a more active stance, ready to charge into the unknown.
The artworks are on display from Jan. 6 to 17 at the Ysobel Gallery, 2F Serendra, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
