Desperate to protect his loved ones, Matt goes looking for answers. Who’s after them? And why? Matt finds himself caught up in a web of lies that leaves him questioning everything he once trusted.
Can he get to the truth before it’s too late?
I seem to be on a bit of a trend-following mission of late and find myself drawn to suspense-mystery novels. I’m like a thrill seeking Bookworm, just hunting down those twists and turns that make this genre of books so compelling. Until reading this description on Net Galley, I had never heard of the author, Paul Pilkington. I was thrilled when my request to read the advance copy was granted. (Thank you, Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer Publishers.)
I did enjoy ‘For Your Own Protection’ even though the twists within it were pretty predictable with an extremely neat and tidy ending that had all its’ lose ends tied up and tucked in. This didn’t detract from the actual story though, which is a good one and does give you a sense of unease and creepiness. I read it feeling that I needed to keep one eye on the book but the other on my child! (Isn’t it great when a book has that much power over our thoughts and emotions?)
Matt is a likeable character but I did want to reach into the book at times to give him a good shake to make him open his eyes to what was going on around him. I suspected everyone from his girlfriend to his ex-partner; his sister to his boss. I even doubted his 4 year old son, Charlie, as a credible witness and felt he was keeping things from us!
I enjoyed the style of writing and the book was a quick, easy read. Pilkington is the author of the Emma Holden trilogy, which I am yet to read. It’s a series that has completely bypassed me somehow. I only found out about it by stalking Paul online. He has his own website, which at the moment is offering the second installment of the E.H. trilogy as a free download. Check it out here – Paul Pilkington
