Game of Thrones S6, E3 “Oathbreaker” Review

Oathbreaker starts with the resurrected Jon Snow. I love this scene as Jon’s reaction feels very realistic which must’ve been very hard to do since of course no one knows what it is like to actually be brought back from the dead. The bit where Jon goes outside is also great. This is followed by a nice little scene with Sam and Gilly, finally Gilly starts to understand that Sam is just doing what he feels is best.

The Tower of Joy sequence is great as it includes quite an exciting fight sequence and a good younger Ned Stark. Bran being heard is very interesting as well. Varys has a good scene where he learns that the Sons of the Harpy are working for the slave masters from Astapor and Yunkai who want revenge against Daenerys which was the only logical explanation so it’s good to finally have that confirmed. I find the little scene with Tyrion, Missandei and Grey Worm quite funny as well.

Cersei’s plan for revenge is starting to take shape but in what form is still unknown but now she has little birds of her own thanks to Qyburn. The small council scene really shows that Cersei and Jaime are not in a good position, everyone is pretty pissed off at Cersei for screwing over the Tyrells and for giving so much power to the High Sparrow and his faith militant.

Tommen finally tries to make a stand to save Margaery but of course he is so weak so he gets completely played by the High Sparrow, him starting to manipulate Tommen will only result in bad things so it is quite gripping to see where it leads. The montage where Arya starts improving her skills and eventually gets her eyesight back is good.

It’s great to see Osha and Rickon return but them being in Ramsay’s hands does not bode well for them. The hanging scene at the end is brilliant as it is so satisfying to see Thorne and Olly die and it is also quite a dark shift for Jon’s character which shows that he has changed a bit since his resurrection. Jon leaving makes perfect sense as his watch ended when he died and leaves his character open in a very interesting way.

Overall, this is a great episode. Every scene here is quality and some are just brilliant. While this is an episode that is mostly just setting the pieces in place everything is heading in an interesting direction.

8/10
