I, the Betrayer are a Norwegian metal band and this is their debut EP.
This is the first EP from this new band, although as there’s over 30 minutes of material here, it’s actually longer than some albums.
This is heavy metal that carries a mix of old and new in its makeup. With a mixture of bands such as Audrey Horne, Machine Head, Iron Maiden, Metallica, and Blind Guardian, there’s a good mixture of influences seen across the tracks.
The songs are mainly well-written and have quite a few quality hooks in them. For their first release there’s still a little bit of fat to be trimmed, but this is not a deal-breaker, and the majority of the material here is very enjoyable.
Heavy, but without being overly so, this is chugging, energetic heavy metal that shows a good attitude throughout the playing time. I like their leads and solos very much.
Although a lot of the music is upbeat, they’re not afraid to slow things down to a more considered pace when the song calls for it.
The vocals are a combination of clean singing mixed with deeper growls and shouts. Like the music, this demonstrates that the band exist between the old and new worlds of metal. What I like though is the fact that this is not actually a bad thing, as rather than being trapped there, the band are there of their own choosing, picking the best bits of what they like from the various metal eras for use in their music.
I’ve enjoyed this, and would definitely be interested to hear more from this band in the future. I think 7 shows a band with a lot of promise, as when they really hit their stride, they really hit the spot.
Check this out and see what you think.
