July book haul #1

This week was full of new books: I got two ARC’s in the mail and I bought another at a bookmarket for only €3,-! On the one hand it feels good to have new books on my shelves, really good, but on the other hand it makes my TBR pile even the more … scary. This week I finished three books, but today’s book haul just added three more. So, my TBR pile is still as scary as it was. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the three latest additions to my shelves!

Murder in Little Shendon by A.H. Richardson

MURDER IN LITTLE SHENDON Picture, if you will, a picturesque village called Little Shendon, suddenly caught up in dealing with a murder of one of its citizens – not a particularly well-liked one at that. Which makes it all the more intriguing because the list of suspects becomes very long. This tantalizing tale unfolds with delightful twists and turns to find out whodunit to Mr. Bartholomew Fynche, the murdered shopkeeper. Fear grips the community as the investigation slowly progresses. Everyone is interviewed; everyone is suspect! From the murdered man’s housekeeper to Lady Armstrong, her staff and her nephew. Or could it be the shy librarian new in town? Or the defiant retired army major and his ladyfriend, the post mistress? Or perhaps the weird sisters who live on the edge of town? Then there is the couple who own the local inn and pub, along with the two Americans who are staying there? Even the vicar and his wife fall under the gloom of suspicion. Uncertainty, wariness, and terror reign as neighbors watch neighbors to discover the evil that permeates their upturned lives. No one feels safe in this charming little village. A.H. Richardson, noted author, places in your trembling hands a mystery murder that will keep you reading until you learn the details, uncovered by Police Inspector Stanley Burgess and his two amateur detectives, his friend Sir Victor Hazlitt and the famed Shakespearean actor Beresford Brandon. Scratch your head with them over the strange clues that turn up. Follow them as they tread carefully among the landmines that appear innocent as they lie hidden beneath the surface of mystery. Something evil skulks in this tiny country village. Who is the murderer? And why was this strange uncivil man dispatched in such a seemingly civil community? You are challenged to discover the culprit before the last few pages. And no fair looking ahead – it’s the journey that proves the most enticing.

I just love cozy murder mysteries (if murders can be cozy?). Well, I think you know what I mean. I just love to curl up on the couch, with some hot tea in my favourite mug and watch or read a murder mystery. Preferably one set in England or Sweden! It’s such a pity that there aren’t any on Netflix (think about Midsomer Murders and Walander (not the UK version)), so when I got the opportunity to read and review Murder in Little Shendon I was immediately looking forward to reading it! AND stay tuned, because this weekend there will also be a give-away on this book up on my instagram!

Whispers in the Wind by S.M. Stryker

I was in love with Drayton Clay.

Dray was my everything, the boy that grew into an amazing man.

The day that he proposed to me, was not only the most wonderful day of my life but the most tragic as well. I died that night with him.

Maison Keller walked into my life and flipped it on its axis. He didn’t teach me how to live, but he showed me that there was more to live for. Until that night, and once again, my life came crashing down around me.

Kai was there to catch me, to help me pick up the shattered pieces of my heart, and even though there were missing pieces, the heart he gave back wasn’t glass or crystal that would shatter again, it was gold, pure and strong.

Callie Bailey is in love with her high school sweetheart, Drayton Clay, quarterback for the Cougars. It wasn’t love at first sight, but their friendship grew into an invincible bond, a bond that could only be broken by one thing. The day was amazing; he had it all planned out, they were going to get married and she would have a family again. She never expected that amazing day would end like this.

Every day was the same for her, she is just existing, it had been almost two years. That is until Maison Keller walked into her office turning her world upside down. He was fun, caring and loving. He told her of his dream to build the best night club around and with her help Saber Elite was born.

Maison made Callie feel again, she once again opened her heart, but Maison had a dark secret, and before he had the chance to tell Callie about his demons, the nightmare had started.

Kai Sterling knows he shouldn’t get involved, but can’t help himself. After seeing her that first night, he knew he wanted more. There was something about the woman sitting in the mud puddle in the middle of a rain storm that pulled him to her. Callie was something he never thought he would have, but deep down always wanted.

Callie soon realized what she needed to do. Her spiritual quest showed her just how precious and fragile life is and one of these men possessed the heart of gold she had lost years ago, and this time she wasn’t letting go.

This is the other ARC I received in the mail this week and I’m really curious about this book. It sounds like an emotional rollercoaster, so I’m looking forward to reading it!

Bag of Bones by Stephen King

Stephen King’s most gripping and unforgettable novel, Bag of Bones, is a story of grief and a lost love’s enduring bonds, of a new love haunted by the secrets of the past, of an innocent child caught in a terrible crossfire.

Set in the Maine territory King has made mythic, Bag of Bones recounts the plight of forty-year-old bestselling novelist Mike Noonan, who is unable to stop grieving even four years after the sudden death of his wife, Jo, and who can no longer bear to face the blank screen of his word processor.

Now his nights are plagued by vivid nightmares of the house by the lake. Despite these dreams, or perhaps because of them, Mike finally returns to Sara Laughs, the Noonans’ isolated summer home.

He finds his beloved Yankee town familiar on its surface, but much changed underneath — held in the grip of a powerful millionaire, Max Devore, who twists the very fabric of the community to his purpose: to take his three-year-old granddaughter away from her widowed young mother. As Mike is drawn into their struggle, as he falls in love with both of them, he is also drawn into the mystery of Sara Laughs, now the site of ghostly visitations, ever-escalating nightmares, and the sudden recovery of his writing ability. What are the forces that have been unleashed here — and what do they want of Mike Noonan?

Last Friday I saw a book-market in a church and I just HAD to take a look. I was searching for King books, but didn’t find any. Until I was ready to leave and the very last book I saw was Bag of Bones, hardcover edition, for only €3,-!! I just couldn’t leave without buying it and so I did!
