review 1: Slow moving at first and then too quick at the end, this somewhat bleak tale of the lives of women, first in the cities where work is meaningless, women are not allowed to reproduce unless they win the raffle and hope is all but gone. There has been a catastrophic destruction of the old way of life, people no longer occupy the countryside, except for an almost legendary group of women at Carhulan. This is where our lead character heads and this is where she must choose - to hide or to take the initiative and attack. Lesbian romance, conflicting loyalties and day to day existence are well depicted. There are deliberate gaps in the story and the ending is over in a flash, leaving the reader a bit up in the air. Certainly thought provoking.
review 2: Read this wit
... moreh a different title: The Carhullan Army. I never read speculative fiction so I approached this as someone who is endlessly exposed to discussions about Eco and political apocalypse and different ways of surviving in the future. This is all about whether it's enough just to survive as isolationists while everyone else is fucked over. Of course I lapped up the details of the remote women's commune that trains its own army as it grows its own food but the pacing is weird and I didn't end up that satisfied. Felt like a novella that wanted to be a novel. less

This book has a great concept but it really was not fleshed out that well. It ends really abruptly!

I held back from five stars due to the ending, can say I'm not crazy 'bout the ending.

Also titled The Carhullan Army, this is a dystopian novel of the highest order.
