Aquaman Vol. VII
review 1: Not as good as the previous volume, this one explores a previously unknown period of Aquaman's history where he was a founding member of a B-list supergroup with illogical Atlantean artifacts. I find myself wondering if it's necessary. His ties to his arch-nemesis, Black Manta, are revealed, but the larger Atlantean plot is only teased further. Having committed murder and having a touch of bloodthirst in him set this New 52 Aquaman apart from his Justice League contemporaries in interesting ways.
review 2: I don't know what to think of Aquaman having his own super team; it seems kind of random and it feels a bit like he's starting to lay groundwork for Aquaman like he did for Green Lantern, although this isn't nearly that expansive. Still, to introduce (and th
... moreen dispatch most of) a new batch of heroes is kind of weird to me. The story works okay, with a fair number of action beats, but the new characters just don't immediately draw me in; part of it may be who they are (Prisoner-of-War in particular seems uninspired if not in outright bad taste), but part is that they seem disposable. The overarching story has some interesting moments, but this book really didn't blow me away; it's not as strong as the first volume was. Kind of treads water, if you want to go for the pun.... less
