review 1: Another very well written thriller by Michael Robotham. It cleverly mixes fact and fiction as a gargantuan money trail makes it way from war-torn Iraq into the hands of the ne'er-do-wells. The main protagonist is ex-policeman, three times married and three times divorced, Victor Ruiz. He reminds me a little of TV's Columbo - shabby, underestimated, but ultimately smart as a whip. Again he teams up with Forensic Psychologist Professor Joe O'Laughlin, as they work their way towards the top of a squillion dollar money laundering scheme - and save a few lives along the way. The O'Laughlin/Ruiz books have fast become one of my favourite series and I look forward to reading the next instalment asap.
review 2: Protagonists in Michael Robotham's books are not heroes. T
... morehey are smart, sure, but flawed. So when ex-detective Vincent Ruiz rescues a young woman from her abusive boyfriend and she realizes her purse and phone are gone, Ruiz takes her to his home so she can search for her friends' number, use his phone, and clean up. But it's part of the ploy, because she drugs him with the wine he offers, then robs him. He can't even go to the police, because he'll look like the lecher that this once, he was not. The plot is international, and with all of Robotham's books, it is complicated and moves at a good pace. You get to know the characters and their motivations. You get to know that as with most of Robotham's books, there is much more going on that you think. Good book. Sorry to have it end. less
