First Thoughts: A new graphic novel where Alternative History meets Dystopian meets Urban Fantasy
Synopsis:
In the York Kingdom―a world where humans live among elves, trolls, faeries and dragons, and where the architecture is a blend of modern and medieval―the struggles between its citizens are no different than our own. Centuries of perpetual warfare and class struggle have divided York’s population for all of history, but with the election of a new leader, there may be hope for peace after all. That is until a massive bomb rips through Times Square, killing everyone in its path and potentially shattering any hope at armistice.
Now it’s up to the city’s beat cops and detectives, known as the Knights of York, to track down the attackers and restore order before the warring populations destroy each other completely.
My Thoughts:
I picked up this graphic novel at Barnes and Noble, as I do, because of the cover. It was a striking contrast to see the rider and horse against the Dystopian background. I was a bit disappointed when the graphics inside the book did not have the same artistic sense as the cover but hey we can’t have everything.
The first thing that I want to get out of the way is what I did not like about it. There were no chapter differentiations, so when the novel moved from various points of view I was taken out of the world for a moment as I tried to get my bearings. This feeling dissipated towards the end of the book but it did leave a mark on my opinion of the book as there were moments that I was confused momentarily about what was going on. I did enjoy the story of this graphic novel; it had an interesting alternative American history world where instead of an elected government, there is a monarchy. The authors did not provide a lot of backstory as to how this Kingdom of York came about, which I hope they include in future editions.
The characters were not flat, they had pasts, feelings, and definitely some strong opinions. I loved the Queen. She did not take crap from anyone and was trying to make peace in York which many of her advisors were against. I enjoyed reading about the comradery of the Knights; it was well written and I could understand their bond.
Overall, I will be reading the next edition if there is one. Currently, there is not even a GoodReads page for this book but I did find the authors’ pages. Another note, this graphic novel was supposed to come out on May 15, 2018, so I don’t know if someone at Barnes and Noble got excited and put it out early or if Amazon is out of the loop.
