Title: Miss Mayhem
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Series Status: 2nd book in the Rebel Belle Trilogy
# of pages: 273
My rating: 2/5 stars
From Goodreads* Note this is not the first book in the series so the synopsis may contain spoilers *
Life is almost back to normal for Harper Price. The Ephors have been silent after their deadly attack at Cotillion months ago, and her best friend, Bee, has returned after a mysterious disappearance. Now Harper can focus on the important things in life: school, canoodling with David (her nemesis-turned-ward-slash-boyfie), and even competing in the Miss Pine Grove pageant.
Unfortunately, supernatural chores are never done. The Ephors have decided they’d rather train David than kill him. The catch: Harper has to come along for the ride, but she can’t stay David’s Paladin unless she undergoes an ancient trial that will either kill her . . . or make her more powerful than ever.
So I do not really know why I continued this series other than I hoped that it would get better but sadly it did not.
Starting with the characters, which had no growth in this second installation to me and felt pretty much the same as in the first book. Harper was a character I really disliked in the first book and this one was no different since her character did not really change or grow. I was hoping her overall one dimensional aspect would be fixed with a new story but instead it felt very similar to the first story.
One of the redeeming parts of this story for me is always the magic system. It’s well detailed and explained even if it was more of an minor part of this book it was still really well done and probably one of the few things that I enjoyed.
Probably my least favorite thing about this installment is the fact that it had middle book syndrome. The entire plot felt very centered around a small thing and not much really happened so it caused the story to feel very slow.
Overall this book was not for me and I think I am officially done with continuing this series.
