review 1: I picked this up in a remainder pile, wondering what Blatty had written in recent decades. A lot of readers, to judge from Amazon reviews, didn't like this because it was no Exorcist. Well, DUH! This was a full 4 decades after Exorcist -- I certainly HOPED the author had moved on. Blatty is not a one-genre author, and any one expecting another possessed-by-the-devil book would be quite disappointed if they expected this to go there. I will give those who complained (many who revealed in their comments that they had not read much beyond the first chapter or so), that this is not a book that makes much sense until you get to the end. That being said, I will not say too much about it except read the opening chapters carefully -- their details will make more sense later. It is... more actually a well written intrigue, but sadly Blatty probably sold most of the copies to people hoping to read an Exorcist update, while other readers probably avoided it BECAUSE they thought it would be an Exorcist update. Not to mention I am sure it was no accident that the publisher put a big blood-red cross on the cover and noted that it was written by the Exorcist author.
review 2: I'm not sure what happened between The Exorcist and Dimiter, but Mr. Blatty lost me. Dimiter started off as intriguing then my enthusiasm died rather quickly. The plot remained elusive until I'd read almost two thirds of the novel, the writing was poorly executed, either that, or the editor took a vacation, and the ending...senseless and boring. Sadly, I wouldn't classify Dimiter as a good read. The characters were great, but as for everything else...an epic fail. less
