Alternate Universe In Which I Am Unfazed By The Men Who Do Not Love Me.

The first time I heard Olivia Gatwood was on YouTube with her poem ‘Alternate Universe In Which I Am Unfazed By The Men Who do Not Love Me.’ I was amazed with her style and how she could bring her stories to life. (FYI, contains strong language).

This was my first book of 2018, and I absolutely fell in love with it. I was hoping she would have just as much sass on the page as she does on stage, and I was not disappointed. In New American Best Friend, Olivia Gatwood writes about adolescence, gender and sexuality. Her words are so strong and powerful that it depicts  what growing up was like for her and brings a strong sense of nostalgia.  It is also evident that she is a feminist and what I love most about this book is her honesty,  she talks about things that people are scared/ embarrassed to talk about such as periods in ‘Jordan Convinced Me That Pads Are Disgusting.’ But she also writes about things which she feels women should not be ashamed of, which is why she has written ‘ Ode To My Bitch Face’ and ‘Ode To My Period Underwear.’

another theory is that you put it on every morning

screw it tight like a jar of jelly

Ode To My Bitchface.

Over the years I have become a massive spoken word fan, and it has even tempted me to try it myself. Olivia Gatwood is an inspiration, and definitely in my top ten of spoken word poets, her style is sassy and brilliant. If you are a lover of poetry yourself, I highly recommend reading this book. You will love it.  What a great book to start the year off with!

Rating: 10/10.

My next book will be The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. I’ve decided I need to be more open and read a variety of books, so detective it is next!
