New releases: August 2017 - graphic novels & comics - Owlish Books

Two things:

  • I know today is not Wednesday, excuse me for the change in my regular publishing planning. But I’m taking part in another blog tour and I will be posting my review of that brand new book this Wednesday. So I’m doing my weekly new releases post two days early.
  • It’s one of those freak weeks with a fifth Wednesday again! Last week I had some trouble deciding on which genre to choose, so this week wasn’t any easier. So I decided to be a little freaky as well and talk about a genre I’ve never talked about before: graphic novels and comics.

So let’s get right to it and discover the top 5 of new graphic novels and comics releases for August! Other new releases of August 2017 can be found by genre right here on Goodreads.

  • God Country by Donny Cates & Geoff Shaw (God Country Collected Edition)
    Publication date: August 2nd 2017
“Southern Bastards” meets “American Gods” in a high-stakes fantasy series that masterfully blends high-octane action and jaw-dropping worldbuilding. In “God Country”, readers meet Emmett Quinlan, an old widower rattled by dementia. Emmett isn’t just a problem for his children–his violent outbursts are more than the local cops can handle. When a tornado levels his home–as well as the surrounding West Texas town–a restored Quinlan rises from the wreckage. An enchanted sword at the eye of the storm gives him more than a sound mind and body, however. He’s now the only man who can face these otherworldly creatures the sword has drawn down to the Lone Star State… In “God Country” salvation is a double-edged sword.
  • Reborn: Book One by Mark Miller, Greg Capullo & Jonathan Glapion (Reborn #1-6)
    Publication date: August 2nd 2017
Where do you go when you die? Not heaven or hell; somewhere else. Somewhere you have to fight to survive. Somewhere the people from the past are waiting for you–the good and the bad. Bonnie Black has no faith in an afterlife. Spending her last days in the stroke ward of a county hospital, she fears falling asleep in case she doesn’t wake up. When a final stroke ends her life, Bonnie is reborn in Adystria–a sci-fi fantasy world that’s locked in a raging battle between good and evil. She’s twenty-five again, there’s a sword in her hand and she’s ready to fight. She meets her dad, Tom, and her childhood dog in Adystria, but there is no sign of Harry–her husband who was murdered over ten years before. With the help of her dad and loyal pet, Bonnie sets off on an epic quest to be reunited with the lost love of her life. But it’s not just her family that have been waiting for Bonnie. Her arrival has been prophesied, and there’s a tremendous evil lying in wait. An evil that will stop at nothing to destroy her. An evil that can only be sated with blood. Superstar creators MARK MILLAR and GREG CAPULLO join forces to create the sci-fi story of the year, collecting issues 1-6.
  • Slam! Vol. 1 by Pamela Ribon & Veronica Fish
    Publication date: August 8th 2017
In the fast-paced, hard-hitting, super cheeky, all-female world of banked track roller derby, two young women will have to decide if their budding friendship is stronger than the pull of a team when a win is on the line. When life starts coming at you like a freight train, you have two options: run away screaming or lean into the hit. From the first day of Fresh Meat Orientation for the Eastside Roller Girls, Jennifer and Maisie knew they’d be fast friends. But when they’re drafted to different teams, the pull of competition — and their increasingly messy personal lives — threaten to drive them apart. In roller derby you take your hits, get back up, and learn how to be a better jammer, a better blocker, a better lover, and a better friend. Derby can heal your heart . . . but it might break a bone or two in the process. Bestselling novelist, screenwriter, and retired Los Angeles Derby Doll Pamela Ribon (Going In Circles, Why Girls Are Weird) joins artist Veronica Fish (Archie, Silk) for a tale of friendship, heartbreak, and truly epic jams.
  • Ether, Vol. 1: Death of the Last Golden Blaze by Matt Kindt & David Rubín
    Publication date: August 1st 2017
A science-minded adventurer gets mixed up in the mysteries of a fantasy world in this charming new adventure from an award-winning creative team. Boone Dias is an interdimensional explorer, a scientist from Earth who has stumbled into great responsibility. He’s got an explanation for everything, so of course the Ether’s magical residents turn to him to solve their toughest crimes. But maybe keeping the Real and the Abstract separate is too big a job for just one man.
  • Paper Girls, Vol. 3 by Brian K. Vaughan & Cliff Chiang (Paper Girls: Collected Editions #3)
    Publication date: August 8th 2017
The multiple Eisner and Harvey Award-winning series from BRIAN K. VAUGHAN and CLIFF CHIANG continues, as newspaper deliverers Erin, Mac and Tiffany finally reunite with their long-lost friend KJ in an unexpected new era, where the girls must uncover the secret origins of time travel… or risk never returning home to 1988.
  • I’ve never been a big reader of comic or graphic novels. I’ve of course read the Belgian classics, beause we are know for gems like Tintin or Nero! But I have a extensively developed fantasy, so I prefer reading words and painting the pictures in my mind. That being said, the third comic (or graphic novel?) does sound interesting! By the way, who can explain the difference between a comic and a graphic novel to me? You’re welcome to educate me in the comment section!

    Happy reading,

    Loes M.
