October 2017: Wrap-Up

My favorite month of the year has come and gone. Typically this makes me feel slightly melancholy, but October was a crazy, stressful month for me. Therefore, I’m slightly relieved to leave it in the past now. October wasn’t all bad, however, I finally managed to come out of the reading slump I’ve been in with a handful of excellent books. You can read more about them below!

Peter Pan – JM Barrie (5/5 stars) Peter Pan is one of those books that have stolen my heart. I’m in love with the story, the characters, the symbolism, everything about it. When I am in a reading slump, I’ve always found that rereading a quick, beloved novel typically does the trick in getting me out of it. Peter Pan achieved just that. (And isn’t this cover design gorgeous?!)

Everything Is Illuminated – Jonathan Safran Foer (5/5 stars) A few years ago I read Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and I absolutely loved it. Sometime soon afterwards, I received Everything Is Illuminated. I’ve let it sit on my shelf for way too long. The novel is funny, quirky, heartbreaking, and so human. The way Jonathan Safran Foer writes, is such a creative art, as is the way he puts the story together. This has been one of my favorite books of the year and Foer is one of my favorite writers. I can’t wait to read more from him in the future.

Turtles All The Way Down – John Green (5/5 stars) John Green and his novels stole my heart years ago. I have been highly anticipating the release of this one, and I’m typically not the type to pay much attention to new releases. This novel did not disappoint, I read the entire book in one day. It’s charming, funny, real, everything I’ve come to expect from a John Green novel. Green also paints a real and vulnerable portrait of what it’s like living with anxiety. I was diagnosed years ago and I have never found a book that so accurately portrays this illness. As you read you see the character’s illness escalate more and more, until finally hitting a breaking point. I could go on and on about this one. I’m already wanting to reread it!

The Shack – William Paul Young (3/5 stars) This is another book that has sat on my shelf for a long time. I really enjoyed the story and how it condensed elements of the Christian faith into a simple, real, and intimate way. However, I didn’t enjoy the story as much as I thought that I would. I have heard so much hype about this book for years. So while I did enjoy it and do recommend it, I believe my expectations were too high.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry – Fredrik Backman (5/5 stars) I have been seeing Backman’s novels everywhere, and I’m so happy I finally picked up my first. This was honestly, the sweetest book I have ever read. It was funny, creative, sweet, and full of Harry Potter references. I can’t wait to read more from Fredrik Backman in the future.

As you can see, I read some really great novels in October. I’m midway in a couple books at the moment and November is looking to be a great month of reading as well.

Until then,

Kaycee x
